Free Wildfire Exhibit at the Truckee Community Recreation Center

In General, when you think about an art exhibit, wildfire doesn’t come to mind. However, there is currently a free wildfire exhibit called Forest <=> Fire on display at the Truckee Community Recreation Center and its getting rave reviews. The art display explores all aspects of forest and fire flowing through the past, present, and future. It includes paintings, textiles, beadwork, sculpture, photography, and more.

The creators of these pieces of art want to inspire conversation and thought, looking at wildfire as something beyond tragedy and loss.

The result is a show that mimics a giant picture book. Each “chapter” of the book features art pieces with accompanying essays written in English, Spanish, and the native Washoe language. The 17 chapters focus on topics such as smoke, soil health, species loss, and area watersheds.

“Our exhibition gives voice to real solutions from the science community, industry, federal, state and local fire, and water agencies, and our tribal populations,” Eliza Tudor, executive director of Nevada County Arts Council, said in a press release. “We invite the public to join us for this conversation while “living” the history and future of our forests in a deeply visceral and beautiful way.”

Through the story and artwork of 18 California writers and artists, the exhibition:

  • Shares a science-based solution to catastrophic fire.

  • Addresses the paradox that some trees need to be removed to save the Forest.

  • Explains why fire needs to become our partner in returning the Forest to resiliency.

  • Provides a vision of what a healthy future forest actually looks like.

  • Offers an economically sustainable, hopeful future for the Forest.

  • Aims to activate a transformative cultural understanding that we learn to live as a part of Nature, rather than apart from Nature in facing Climate Change
