How To Fireproof Your Mountain Home

If you are a homeowner in a mountain town, like Truckee, fireproofing your property is essential. Not only does it give you peace of mind, but it could potentially save your home from a catastrophic wildfire. Here are some tips on how to fireproof your property:

Fireproof Your Mountain Home

1. Clear out Flammable Plants and Fuels: The first line of defense in fireproofing a property is to clear out flammable plants and fuels like dried grass, fallen branches, and dead leaves. Remove any debris that could easily catch fire, such as piles of lumber or leaves. See Truckee Fire Protection Districts Guidelines

2. Yard Maintenance: Keeping your lawn manicured is an important step in fireproofing a property. Keep your grass and other plants well-trimmed to at least 6” high, and rake away any debris or sticks. Regularly inspect your home for any trees or branches that are too close to your house—they should be trimmed or removed to prevent sparks from setting them alight. See the 2023 Green Waste Dumpster Rebate Program

3. Check Your Fire Alarm and Smoke Detectors: Make sure your fire alarm and smoke detectors are in good working condition—this can mean the difference between life and death in the event of a fire. For Help with Maintenance

4. Install Fire-Resistant Materials: If you are looking to reduce the risk of your home being damaged by a fire, consider investing in fire-resistant materials. These materials typically include things like metal siding and roofs, asphalt shingles, fire-rated doors, and double-pane windows. See California’s Fire Codes

5. Clean Up After Grilling: Grilling outdoors can be a great way to cook and entertain, but it can also be a source of danger. Make sure you clean up any grease or fat that may have spilled and dispose of hot charcoal properly in a metal container.

By following these simple steps, you can help to fireproof your property and keep your family safe. Take the time to take the necessary preventive measures today, so you don’t have to worry about the consequences of a fire tomorrow.

Truckee as a Firewise Community

Firewise is a national program created by the National Fire Protection Association that addresses the risks of homes to wildfire in the wildland/urban interface. It encourages local community-based solutions for wildfire safety, with the goal of reducing home ignition due to wildfire. Firewise emphasizes homeowner responsibility and provides the framework for education dissemination, community partnerships, and local actions that support community wildfire safety efforts. Truckee Fire Protection District is working as a partner with the community to establish Truckee as a nationally recognized Firewise Community.

You Can Make A Difference Where You Live

The 416 Wildfire threatened the community, but because of the work residents had done to prepare their homes, firefighters were able to protect homes within the community. Hear their story through the perspective of both residents and firefighters.
