October is one of those special times of year in Truckee and Lake Tahoe. The mountains glow with golden aspens, the mornings feel a little crisper, and our communities settle into a quieter pace before winter arrives.

While summer and ski season tend to get much of the attention, fall has a charm all its own. It’s a wonderful time to explore the outdoors, visit local businesses, enjoy community traditions, and take in the beauty of the Sierra Nevada as the seasons change.

Whether you’re a longtime local, visiting for the weekend, or considering making Truckee-Tahoe your home, there’s still plenty to enjoy this October. Here are a few upcoming events and seasonal activities to add to your calendar.

Take in the Fall Colors Around Truckee and Lake Tahoe

Of course, not every memorable October day needs an event on the calendar.

Sometimes the best way to enjoy fall in the mountains is to slow down and take in the scenery.

The changing aspens and cottonwoods create beautiful pockets of color throughout the region, and the cooler temperatures make this a wonderful time for a scenic drive, an afternoon walk, or a peaceful morning by the lake.

Donner Lake is always a favorite place to enjoy the changing seasons, while the trails around Truckee and North Lake Tahoe offer opportunities to experience the fall landscape on foot.

The Truckee River corridor can also be especially beautiful this time of year, with golden leaves contrasting against the water and surrounding evergreens.

Fall weather in the Sierra can change quickly, so it’s always a good idea to check conditions before heading out and bring an extra layer.

Spend a Little Extra Time in Downtown Truckee

There’s something especially inviting about Historic Downtown Truckee during the fall.

With the summer rush behind us, October is a lovely time to wander through local shops, enjoy a warm drink at a favorite café, or settle in for a meal at one of the area’s restaurants.

Whether you’re spending an afternoon with friends or introducing visitors to the area, downtown is always worth exploring.
